Tanu weds Manu Returns has some personal Finance lessons too :-)

Tanu Weds Manu Returns is a Romantic Comedy Drama film sequel to Tanu weds Manu released in 2011.The movie is crazy and full of Entertainment. No, this is not a review of the movie but sharing some Personal Finance lessons that one can learn from this movie 🙂

Don’t raise your Expectations to an Unreasonable level:  It’s been four years since Tanu and Manu’s eventful wedding and they’re already feeling the seven year itch. Settled in London, their relationship is now as cold as the London winter. While Tanu expected her husband to be flamboyant, Manu wanted a docile and peaceful wife. Expectations play a spoilsport here.

Similarly, in investments, the key issue is not the return that one gets on his investment but the expectations that are being set is an issue. After getting decent returns, the greed is not satiated which is the mere cause of discontentment. Firstly, the expectations have to be set right, they have to be realistic and not unreasonable.

Special Occasions will be remembered:  Anything which is done on Special occasions will be remembered for long.  In Asylum Manu says “Kya S.x S.x , Akhiri baar 2013 me hua tha who bhi Bhai dooj ke Din..” 😉

If Financialdecisions are taken on special occasions, it will be remembered like buying a car/ house on Birthday, anniversary etc. Starting with Investment for child’s education on Child’s birthday or Naming ceremony will be remembered for long .

Also, Gifting investment products on special occasion will hold a special place. In the movie, Tanu gifted Manu a tie on his 40th birthday and it was remembered.

Move on : It hurts to let go but sometimes it hurts more to hold on. Tanu and Manu decide to move on as they believed that their life post marriage is not working, they decided to call it quits and move on. Similarly, clinging to wrong investment decision will do more harm than good. If we are emotionally attached and do not put a stop loss or sell it, we not only lose in monetary terms but also it proves bad for our mental health. We may have regrets for it later in life.

No time is wrong Time:  No Time is a wrong time to do anything till the intention is right. Manu decides to get married again at the age of 40 to Kusum aka Datto just because he feels that he should do despite Pappi telling him “Aap kahan Bachi ke chakkar me padh gaye” .

He was Just following  his heart.

While managing money, one should not find for right time to take investment decisions , everytime is a right time. There is no wrong time to make the right investment decision. Just follow your gut and go for it. Not to forget the famous Dialogue from the movie Khuda Gawah…” Soch Gehri ho jaye , toh faisle kamzor ho jaate hain…”

Don’t believe what you don’t see: Chintu (Tanu’s lawyer) sents a legal divorce notice to Manu for his own benefit without Tanu’s knowledge. This was a setback for Manu as he was not expecting and he believed in the same which eventually led him to get hooked to Kusum aka Datto. One should not believe on hearsay.

In money management also, one should do his/ her own research and due diligence before going in for any investment option or taking any Financial decision. Buying a stock just because a Friend or relative has made money on the same should not be the only parameter to select a stock.

Don’t be casual: Tanu tries to be casual at various times- when she leaves back Manu in Asylum in London , When she tries to have some good time with Raja Awasthi and few of her ex friends and When she does not calls back Manu on receipt of legal notice. At the end, her heart goes back to her Husband Manu.

Similarly, when it comes to our Money,we generally try to be casual and invest with our bankers, relatives or any other source just to oblige them or just for the sake of it. We keep on Flirting at various places with our money, however towards the end, it is our own trusted Financial Advisor  .…HareePatti 🙂 who comes to the rescue and gets us out of the mess.

  1. Hi Gurleen, loved the way you have related Movie Scenes with the Rules of Investing.

The same rules if read otherwise would have looked boring and most of us would not have read more than a para.

But here we not only read it word by word smilingly but when related it with the movie we got to understand it too.

Looking forward to the next Blog 🙂
